Dance Students Collaborate on New Show

Divergence is going to be performed and choreographed by students who are dance majors at Santa Ana College.

The concert is going to be co-directed by Heather Gillette(the Dance Dept. Chair) and Leann Alduenda and they will perform 3 concerts at Phillips Hall on Thursday May 9 at 7:30 p.m. followed by a post-performance discussion, Friday May 10, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, May 11, at 2:30 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m.

This concert is the students first time choreographing and when asked about the meaning of the name divergence in the show, Heather Gillette stated, “ Just this conceptual idea that regardless of our differences and our different ideas and even though we are going in different directions we still have a place of meeting and we shoot off and use that energy from each other to diverge and then correspond and then diverge again. So there you go divergency.”

The difference between Danceworks and Dancewatch is that Dancewatch is for the fall concerts and Danceworks is for the spring concerts. The idea of the names was originated by Silvia Turner who is the Dean of Fine and Performing Arts. The Dancewatch choreography is presented by the faculty and guest artists, while Danceworks is presented by student choreography.

Last years concert was very different because of the theme. Gillette stated, “ Last year we wanted to try something very very different conceptually different and that was to have more of a holiday themed dance concert where every single piece even though it was different it was all based on this idea of a gift and what does a gift mean…”

This year’s concert is different because it’s not a holiday themed concert and it has more divergence. Gillette explains, “ This concert is going to be different because this is now individual works choreographed by individual students who have very, very different ideas. Some of it is very uplifting and fun, while others are much more emotionally based in example would be one of the dances very theatrical using spoken word which is not used often but it’s addressing mental illness”

The dance will consist of a hip hop piece, a salsa, a folklotical, a jazz, and a contemporary dance which will be more emotional based.

They will perform three concerts at Phillips Hall.  Tickets will be sold for $15.00 for general admission, for staff and seniors it’s $12.00, SAC students with id will cost $9.99 and children 5 to 14 will cost $5.00.

The three shows will be performed on Thursday May 9, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. followed by a post-performance discussion, Friday, May 10, at 7:30pm, and Saturday, May 11, at 2:30PM & 7:30 p.m.
