The Dons Stay Undefeated

Freshman midfielder Marilyn Miranda scored the game-winning goal to help the Santa Ana Dons beat the MiraCosta Spartans 2-1 in their home opener Thursday.

Miranda scored the second goal after stealing the ball off of a pass from the Spartans goalkeeper.

Three minutes into the game, an error caused by the Dons allowed an own goal and the assist was credited to Spartans sophomore midfielder Jazmin Tua.

But that was the only lapse in defense. After an own goal, the Dons dominated possession but were unable to score

Early in the second half, the Dons capitalized on their high-pressure offense with an equalizing goal from sophomore forward Leyna Wood.

Miranda scored the second goal in the 69th minute.

The Dons coach credited the team’s resilience and sharp offense as keys to victory.

“We were creating chances and we were up towards their keeper, just continuing to pressure and finishing our opportunities,” Head Coach Jaymie Baquero said.

Santa Ana managed to stay undefeated by improving their record to 2-0. The Dons will host Grossmont College next week on Friday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m.
