Freshman 149 pounder Benjamin Navarrete leg rides a Cerritos wrestler/Oliver Rivero

The Don lost to the No.2 ranked Cerritos College 36-10 in their first conference of the season on Wednesday night. They lost four of their seven matches.

Despite the team losing, coaches were impressed by the three Dons that won their matches.”I’m happy for a couple of guys. We’re young inexperienced and have to work on some fundamentals. “ Head coach Vince Silva said.

Freshmen 133 pounder Jose Mata and sophomore 184 pounder Daniel Serrano both beat the No.4 ranked wrestlers in their weight classes.

Mata knocked off Cerritos’ Jose Lorenzo 12-0, he now looks to improve his technique in order beat, higher-ranked wrestlers. “I have to improve my shots because it’s going to be tougher taking down the guys that are ranked higher.” Mata said.

Serrano also knocked off the Jarrod Nunez 7-5 in overtime. Serrano had a losing streak of 2-4 going into his match, but watching his two other teammates win encouraged him to step up and now looks to help his team improve all together.

“To see my teammates win motivates me to win. Some of our guys aren’t experienced including myself. We got a lot of things to work on, but we’ll do good come December,” Serrano said.

Freshman Benjamin Navarrete prove that he is the No.4 ranked wrestler at 149 lb weight class,  by domination his match against No.5 V’ante Moore. “It went well [tonight], it was someone I have beaten before and I beat him by more points so that shows progress. There’s no easy way to winning sometimes you have to dig deep.” Navarrete said.
