Politics Hits Sports Arena

By Souliman Maida

Five St. Louis Rams players have created a buzz around the Mike Brown case. Before a Sunday night game against the Oakland Raiders, they stepped out of the tunnel showing the “hands up, don’t shoot” pose used by protestors 12 miles away.

All the players were black.

Mixed feelings surround the situation. The St. Louis Police Association is demanding a public apology for the act and asking the National Football League to penalize the players.

The NFL already has restrictions on touchdown celebrations and unsportsmanlike conduct, but confirmed it won’t fine the athletes.

What makes this more powerful is that the Rams players are standing up for their own community.

Since St. Louis and Ferguson are in adjacent counties, this matter affects the athletes personally and they are taking actions they feel necessary by expressing their views.
