From Newport Beach to Santa Ana, film festivals continue to fill theaters, offering new ways to look into the lives of different people.

The Department of Modern Languages and the Spanish Language Club at Santa Ana College will be hosting its own two-week international film festival Friday.

Students can choose from either Viva Cuba in room W-101 or Three Seasons in R-124 at 6:30 p.m. On May 11, Chorus will be shown in W-101 and Life is Beautiful in R-124 at 6:30 p.m.

“Not a lot of people know about these kinds of films,” said Professor Martha Guerrero, chair of modern languages at SAC. “They’re not too difficult to find.”

Although international films appear rarely in movie theaters, through new rental services like Redbox and Netflix, or even going online or to local libraries, there is still a wide range of genres for people to choose from.

It goes well with different subjects like history, English, and languages, says Guerrero.

Viva Cuba is a story depicting two child best friends running away from their tumultuous lives during Fidel Castro’s dictatorship in Cuba.

Different language professors will be presenting each film at the event, providing insight for what each audience could expect.

“This event is open for the community, for families to come and enjoy,” said Maria Millan, Vice President for SAC’s Spanish Language Club. The club will be providing free popcorn, sodas, and candies.
