Baseball: Scouting report

Santa Ana College wins with small ball and a little help.

Through 27 games, the team is 20-7. In all but two wins the opponent committed at least one error.

The Dons lead the Orange Empire Conference in stolen bases and attempts (51-66), hits (294), batting average (.313), walks (140), on-base percentage (.415) and RBIs (179).

Freshman Tyler Madrid leads the team in runs (26), home runs (4), RBIs (26), slugging percentage (.549) and total bases (56). His .363 batting average is good enough for third on the team.

The Dons don’t possess much home run power other than Madrid. Sophomore Konnor Armijo is the only other player with multiple dingers.

That has led to an average of 9.82 runners left on base, as well as 16 double plays, second most in the OEC.

That’s also because the team creates more opportunities.

The Dons are second in runs scored (200) and slugging percentage (.397), trailing conference leader Orange Coast College. The team ranks fourth in total extra-base hits, doubles, triples and homeruns, with 55. OCC has 74.
