Gauchos dismantle Dons

Sophomore Terryn Large made four of 11 field goal attempts, air-balling on two.

MEN-BASKETBALL: SAC vs. Saddleback.
GAME DATE: Friday, February 22, 2013.

Despite a 28-point blow out loss against powerhouse Saddleback College Friday, the Dons still have a chance to sneak into the playoffs.

Saddleback (25-4) won 15-straight games to end the regular season, leaving the Dons (15-11) road kill twice in that streak.

The first half ended with optimism on the Dons side. Guard Erik Emanuel hit a buzzer-beating jumper, closing Saddleback’s lead to five.

The second half was a different story.

The Gauchos outscored the Dons 51-28 in the half, while shooting 60 percent from the floor, including six of 10 from behind the arc.

“In the second half they came out and showed why they are No. 2 in the state,” Head Coach David Breig said.

The Gauchos’ size plagued the Dons offense. They recorded five blocks and did not allow any good looks for Santa Ana.

“They have a good inside game,” said Breig. “They’re big and fast.”

The Dons shot below its season average, converting 20 of 55 attempts.

Sophomore power forward Terryn Large dominated the teams touches. But Large only made two of 11 free throws, though he went four of 11 from the field.

“I don’t feel I played well at all,” PF, Large said. “I have to take a lot of the blame for this loss.”

Santa Ana College can still make the playoffs as the No. 20 seed. They will have to wait until Monday to see what their ranking will be.

“Anything is possible,” Breig said.

GAME NOTES: Saddleback College stays undefeated in the conference (12-0) with Fridays win. Despite coming into the game ranked No. 1 in the league in points per game at 78.8, the Gauchos have kept the Dons under 60 in both their meetings. The Dons end the regular season with a 3 game skid despite winning its previous 3.
