Listless Dons lose to Vikings

WOMEN’s SOCCER.

Game date: Tuesday, September 13, 2011.

Viking’s forward Claudia Toledo netted two goals while assisting on another, helping Long Beach City overpower the Dons 4-1 at home.

The Vikings scored their first goal two minutes into the game. Toledo capitalized after a lethargic Dons’ defense failed to clear the ball.

“We’re having trouble coming out a little bit slow. We are a young team, and we will work through that,” Head Coach Jodi Coffman said.

Seventeen of the 22 roster spots are filled by freshmen.

Before the half, Long Beach added two more goals to increase their lead to 3-0. Both goals were scored within the final five minutes.

“The first five and the last five of each half are the times when the most goals are scored,” Coffman said. “And that is when we’ve been getting the most goals scored on us.”

The Dons escaped a shut out when forward Nicki Munoz dashed down field, retrieved a long kick from goal keeper Stephanie Hernandez, and blasted the ball into the top left corner of the net.

The team is 1-4 and will begin conference play Friday at home against Santiago Canyon College.
