April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Santa Ana College is taking part by hosting events that bring the issue to light in unique ways.

Events will be held April 26 through April 28, and include workshops defining sexual assault and Title IX, the Clothesline Project, and a viewing and discussion of The Hunting Ground documentary.

“We will teach students how they can go about talking to an administrator if they were ever to experience sexual assault,” psychological services intern Sandra Alfaro said.

The first SAAM took place April 2001, according to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center. Each year the NSVRC picks a different theme and slogan in order to demonstrate the many ways sexual assault can be prevented.

This year the theme is Prevention is Possible.

“I think what the school is doing is great because it’s important for students to know what sexual assault is and how to reach out for help if they ever see it or experience it,” said Hanh Nguyen, a 21-year-old SAC student.
