Four professors and a music student performed in front of a packed Phillips Hall Theatre on Santa Ana College’s new Steinway Model D Grand Piano April 18.
It was the first time many of the performers had played on such a high-quality instrument, music department Chair Brian Kehlenbach said. Two of the concert pieces were composed by Kehlenbach.
In 2013, the Friends of Music Steinway Campaign started raising money for the new grand piano.
The campaign, launched by the SAC Music Department and the SAC Foundation, set out to raise at least $130,000 to purchase the Steinway. The goal was reached in time for the college’s 100th anniversary.
The music department is still accepting donations to the Steinway campaign because the piano needs an ongoing source of income to pay for maintenance and future repairs. The plan is to place a plaque in the lobby as thanks to the campaign’s many donors, Kehlenbach said. To donate go to sac.edu/foundation and click “donate now.”
“We could not have done this without the strong support of our community,” Kehlenbach said.
