New Protocol Set for Concussions

A concussion-detection protocol implemented this fall has identified 13 sustained head injuries at Santa Ana College this year.

The imPACT software tests cognitive abilities in the pre-season using a memory test to establish a baseline. If a concussion is suspected the player comes off the field to re-test.

About 360 athletes took the test in fall 2013, SAC Athletic Trainer Gary Kinney said.

Prior to the software, concussion protocol was to pull a player off the field after a concussion for 24 hours of observation.
