With bases loaded, freshmen infielder Alex Mascarenas’ tenth inning walk-off single to right field gave the Dons a comeback 3-2 victory against the visiting Glendale College Vaqueros Thursday at Don Sneddon Field.
“I was just trying to take a stroke swing to put the ball in play to make their defense make a play. With that there was only one out and making Cameron Baranek to score different ways from third base,” Mascarenas said.
The Vaqueros scored the first run in the fifth inning when Jack Sheeley blasted a hit to center-right allowing David Garcia to score after Dons starting pitcher Logan Roberts walked him.
It wasn’t until of the bottom of the fifth inning that the Dons’ bats began glowing.
Garret Brown and Troy Baird both smacked back-to-back hits placing them in scoring position on second and first-base. Brown scored after capitalizing on a throwing error when Glendale’s starting pitcher Jackson Sigman tossed the ball past first base, leaving the first baseman scrambling for it in foul territory.
In the bottom of the sixth-inning Dons Joshua Vargas hit the RBI-single to right field allowing the Dons to take the 2-1 lead of the game.
The Vaqueros kept fighting back in the eighth inning when Dylan Trimarchi hit a one-out single to left field, allowing the tying run to score.
After that, submarine reliever A.J. Franks stepped onto the mound, striking out two while throwing 2.2 innings of one-hit ball.
But it was Sigman’s two throwing errors to first base that gave the Dons the victory.
“The two error throws to first base were two unearned runs because one guy came all the way around and the other came to third base and score. But [Sigman] did one heck of a job,” said Vaqueros Coach Chris Cicuto.
The victory extends the Dons’ six game streak. They play again Tuesday at home against Cypress College.
