Last second three pointer downs Dons

WOMAN BASKETBALL: Dons vs. Cypress College.
GAME DATE: Wednesday, January-30-2013.

Freshman guard Jeana Magana knocked down a corner three-pointer with 15 seconds left Wednesday, putting Cypress College ahead for good as the visitors snuck past the Dons 65-62.

“Santa Ana College came out with everything they got,” sophomore guard Samantha Soria said. “They made us worried, obviously, until Jeana Magana made that shot.”

In the final eight minutes of the game the two teams tied and change leads seven times.

After sophomore guard Berlin Ohanesian fouled Soria, she hit two free throws with 3.5 seconds left in the game, extending the Chargers lead to three.

“I am confident in my shot,” Soria said. “The team felt calm after the last one went through.”

The two teams entered the contest as Orange Empire Conference opposites. The Dons are winless and the Chargers undefeated in six OEC games.

Ohanesian gave the Dons a 15-12 lead with a three-pointer, before Cypress went on a 15-5 run to end the first half up 27-20.

Freshman forward Carly Ducat put together a double-double in the loss. She scored a team-leading 17 points and grabbed a team-leading 14 rebounds.

“In the first half I didn’t come out to strong,” Ducat said. “I realized I needed to wake up.”

Ducat tied the game at 60, and gave the Dons a short-lived 62-60 lead after a put back.

The Dons play Friday at Irvine Valley College at 7:30 p.m.
