Dons never trail in 15-point win over Cypress CC

MEN BASKETBALL: Dons vs. Cypress College.
GAME DATE: Wednesday, January-30-2013.

Sophomore forward Terryn Large pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds while chipping in 14 points and dishing out four assists in the Dons’ 86-71, win Wednesday against visiting Cypress College.

“We made the effort tonight,” Large said. “It was a win we hadn’t had in a while. We needed this.”

The Dons took an early lead in the game at 3-0, on a Kevin Ramirez three-pointer. At the half the Dons built an imposing 16-point lead, 45-29.

Three-point buckets proved to be the difference of the ball game.

The Dons shot 41.7 percent from behind the arc, hitting 15 of 36 attempts, six more than Cypress converted.

“I don’t think there was anything we could have done tonight to prevent them from getting their ‘W’,” Cypress Head Coach Chris St. Claire said.

Freshman guard Martin Kim led the Dons in scoring with 17 points off the bench. Kim knocked down six of his 10 field goal attempts, including four from the three-point line.

Santa Ana’s aggressive defense led to 14 Cypress turnovers. Freshman guard Erik Emanuel was responsible for one-third of the miscues, completing five steals in 22 minutes of play.

“I read eye signals,” Emanuel said. “When I see they are about to pass I shoot into the lane. I try to be sneaky about it.”

Point guards Cammie Lewis and Kevin Ramirez combined for 12 assists and 20 points. Lewis did not commit a turnover.

“Anytime I get the ball I am looking for my teammates,” Lewis said. “And I trust them to convert.”
