An online campaign to rescue girls kidnapped by Boko Haram, an extremist Nigerian group, has met backlash after #bringbackourgirls went viral.

Notable critics include author Ann Coulter and pundit Rush Limbaugh.

Any time social media attempts to raise awareness of an issue, skeptics call the efforts futile. However, if a problem is not recognized, it cannot be addressed. Hashtags aren’t enough, but the acknowledgement of a problem is the first step to taking care of it.
