When Weight is a Problem

By Nashe Harley

The Fat Acceptance Movement has been gaining support in pop culture for over five decades. People in the medical field, however, are concerned about the message that it sends.

Health risks related to obesity cost the U.S. about $200 billion a year in medical spending alone, with 21 percent of all medical spending being used to combat obesity, according to a study by Cornell University.

Part of the problem is that people don’t know when their weight becomes a problem, according to a Harris Interactive Health Day Survey.

About 70 percent of obese people feel that they are only slightly overweight or in the normal weight range, according to the study.

Most of the participants who were overweight or obese thought that lack of exercise, not overeating, was the cause of their weight issues.
