The Centennial Celebration lit up the neighborhood, with a fireworks display that finished off Santa Ana’s 100th birthday party with a bang.
The first two musical performances of the night were Huynh Gia Tuan and Van Khanh. They performed new and old folkloric songs unique to the Vietnamese-American community.
The Dance Department performed a variety of dance styles, which students learned in class. It was their first performance of the year and it is safe to say they started off on the right foot.
Even SAC President Erlinda Martinez joined Don Mariachi on stage playing the violin, learning to play the style over the summer. The ensemble played old Spanish classics like “Las Mananitas” and “La Malaguena” accompanied by the SAC Ballet Folklorico Mexicanisimo twirling around in traditional Mexican dress. The crowd loved it.
The mix of acts gave way to a burning sky that capped a perfect end to a celebration commemorating a century of academic achievement at a school where diversity is as ingrained into the culture of the student body as it is to the communities that surround the campus.
The party brought a sense of pride to a campus that for some time had been lacking it. Now the Dons charge into a new century full of optimism. Hopefully 99 years from now students are able to celebrate again.
