College Gets Funding Bump

GovernorBrownRail

California’s surprising jump in revenue has allowed Gov. Jerry Brown to propose sending some of that surplus to community colleges under a revised budget.

Brown’s revision calls for a $600 million increase to the state’s 112-campus community college system, on top of the extra $1 billion proposed in January.

The governor’s revised budget proposal will aid our recovery and provide more access and support for students to pursue their educational goals,” said California Community Colleges Chancellor Brice Harris.

About 2.1 million students are enrolled in the state’s public two-year colleges, which may have lost about 600,000 students during the recession, Harris said.

The increased budget would allow colleges to add 65,000 students for the 2015-2016 school year, and hire 600 full-time faculty.
