Police Search for Hit and Run Driver

Police are searching for one of two hit-and-run drivers who struck a 14-year-old girl near campus Monday, police officials said.

The first driver, Adan Camacho, 32, was heading south on Bristol Street, past the intersection of 17th Street, when he clipped a girl who witnesses say appeared to be jaywalking. The impact launched her into the outside lane where she was hit again by a black Cadillac.

Camacho appeared to slow down by the bus stop but then sped off, Santa Ana College student Fernando Coronel said. A witness followed the truck and called police. Camacho was arrested shortly after the accident and charged with felony hit-and-run and driving without a license.

The driver of the Cadillac, who has not been identified, stayed at the scene briefly to talk to police, but did not admit that she hit the girl, police officials said.

Because the girl was crossing the street against a red light, she is at fault, officials said. The drivers will be charged for fleeing the scene.

“She [the pedestrian] was running across to catch the bus. She cut the lanes. I knew she was going to get hit because the cars were going fast,” witness Paul Toree said.

Campus security cameras captured the incident on video, which shows the girl rolling across the road after the second impact. She tried to stand up but collapsed to the ground, remaining there until paramedics arrived.

She was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital with leg injuries and released Tuesday.
