ALBUM REVIEW: Madonna’s MDNA.
In a desperate attempt to cling to her youth, Madonna’s latest album, MDNA is embarrassing in the way that only a 53-year-old hag singing a song called “Gang Bang” could be.
The album title holds the double meaning of, you guessed it, the letters of her name and she admits, a not-so-subtle reference to the rave drug MDMA, better known as ecstasy.
She tries to appeal to a younger crowd that was “like a virgin” to her music until now, in the sense that every track has bass heavy dance music.
As usual, Madonna’s lyrics are simplistic bordering on idiotic. “You’re James Dean driving in your fast car/ You’re a hot track. You’re my super duper star,” she sings in “Superstar.”
It sounds like she’s also hoping to gain some success by taking advantage of the talents of DJ and record producer Benny Benassi. If there is anything positive to be said about the album it is Benassi’s beats.
In order to sell more records, the material girl makes good use of some more youthful, current artists like M.I.A. Madonna also counts on the notoriety of rapper Nicki Minaj. When someone who rhymes “ass” with “ass” is considered the hottest addition to a track, then you have a problem that not even a Kabbalah prayer could save.
Though her songs may be hip, they don’t leave me with a better opinion of this supposed pop icon. Retirement, or acting her age could be Madonna’s salvation.
