Ladies rock the green

Erin Rapae and Justine Bresnahan decided to swing clubs instead of running around a track for P.E. credit in high school.

Rapae, who has been playing for six years, learned to play golf from her grandfather. Bresnahan has been playing since her dad influenced her to pick up a club five years ago. The two women have known each other since middle school and both went on to play on the same team at Valencia High School in Placentia, Calif.

“Santiago Canyon College didn’t have a golf team, so I was recruited over to play at Santa Ana,” said Bresnahan. “We were one member short, so I decided to have Erin come join the team.”

This is the women’s second year playing for the Dons.

“I need to improve my short game this season,” said Bresnahan. “If I practice, focus and have confidence in myself, I can beat my scores from last year.”

Justine has been shooting in the low 80s this season and has a shot at the Orange Empire Conference Regionals. Last season Bresnahan finished with an average of 87.7, putting her in 10th place out of
22 golfers.

“If I consistently shoot in the 80s for the rest of the season, I can make it to regionals with Justine,” Rapae said. “We play with the better players from the other teams since there are only two of us this season. To stay focused when I play, I concentrate on my own game and try not to worry about the other girls.”

Rapae has improved her game since last year, determined to follow her teammate to regionals. Rapae’s average last season was 95.9.

As of Monday, Bresnahan’s average is 81.4 and Rapae shoots 93.6.

Since this is their last season with the Dons, the athletes are excited to make it a strong season. As for their golf careers, they are just going to see how far it takes them.
