The decision of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit to strike down President Obama’s Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents last week further harms our nation’s broken immigration system.
After stalling DAPA for almost a year in federal court, the judges ruled that the president overstepped his powers by bypassing Congress. A frustrated Obama took executive action by allowing undocumented parents of legal citizens and Dreamers to remain, and in some instances, work in the U.S.
Supporters are hoping the Supreme Court rules in their favor.
Until then, parents continue to live in uncertainty.
DAPA would have been a boon to thousands of families who live under the cloak of separation and are treated like second-class people. It is neither a permanent nor a sustainable solution, but it’s a start.
At the same time we must realize only some people will be affected. There is still a long way to go when it comes to reaching a comprehensive solution for immigrants and their families.
The striking down of DAPA puts an even bigger emphasis on how important it is for those in the community to get involved and informed now, since this could be a big part of elections within a year.
