Martinez pushes one past Fullerton

SOFTBALL: Santa Ana College vs. Fullerton College.
GAME DATE: April-3-2013.

Freshman designated player Karina Rosas lofted an RBI single to right field Wednesday, scoring pitcher Devon Rodriguez for the final run of the game.

Freshman left fielder Eryn Martinez’s sacrifice paid quick dividends.

In the bottom of the second inning Wednesday, she blooped a bunt attempt out of the reach of Hornets pitcher Alyssa Felipe’s glove for an RBI infield double in the Dons 4-2 win over visiting Fullerton College.

“It was unexpected,” Co-Head Coach Jessica Rapoza said.

The Hornets scored the first run of the game on freshman left fielder Shaylynn Chapman’s two-out, first inning home run. Chapman smashed the first offering from Dons starting pitcher Devon Rodriguez.

“I usually swing at the first pitch, especially if they look like that,” Chapman said.

The Dons responded in the bottom of the inning with two quick runs. Freshman first baseman Sabrina Perez hit a single to right, scoring freshman Danielle Hernandez and sophomore Alexandra Perkins.

“It was a nice fat pitch and it was calling my name,” Perez said. “I was just trying to hit the first pitch I like into fair territory.”

Fullerton added another run in the top of the third when Perkins, playing second base, made a fielding error on a sharp grounder by Chapman.

In the bottom of the third, with runners on second and third, Karina Rosas lofted a ball over the Hornets second baseman for an RBI single, scoring Rodriguez.

“I liked the pitch but I didn’t hit it right,” Rosas said. “I was fully committed and it turned out to be a good decision.”

The Dons (17-10 overall, 7-6 OEC) host Saddleback College Friday at 2 p.m.
