Webb burns Rustlers' on both ends

Golden West Coach Nick Mitchell had it all figured out.

“We were trying to keep the ball away from Joshua Webb,” Mitchell said.

Needing its first conference win, the Rustlers defense took liberties with the Dons’ wide receiver all day, giving him double coverage and cheap shots aplenty.

But none of that mattered. In the end, Webb would have his vengeance – twofold.

He scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 29-yard pass from quarterback Beau Perry with 27 seconds remaining in the game, pushing the Dons ahead 28-21 after trailing for most of the game. The Dons improved to 6-2, as the Rustlers went down to 2-6.

Perry rifled a precision pass to Webb, but Ruslters defensive back Malcolm Manuel leaped in between Webb and the ball. But the Dons sophomore jumped just a little better, and that much higher, catching the ball that secured the Dons’ fourth touchdown of the second half.

“I told Beau [Perry] to throw it to the back pylon,” Webb said. “I’ll outjump anybody.”

With nothing on the clock Webb caught another touchdown on a ‘Hail Mary’ replay.

Rustlers’ quarterback Roman Lewis threw a ‘Hail Mary’ intended for receiver Alex Taylor, who was parked in the end zone. But Webb, who was on loan to the defense, sprung out of nowhere, this time playing safety, caught the ball that sealed the Ruslters’ loss.

“It’s easy money for me when the ball is up in the air,” Webb said.

The Dons trailed at the half by 14 points, but running back Areseo Lakey scored three third quarter touchdowns to give Santa Ana College its first lead of the game.

“It was nerve wracking. We were down two touchdowns. I knew I had to do some great things to get us back into the game,” Lakey said.

The Dons next play at Palomar Nov. 3, at 6 p.m.
