Dons out run Jaguars

FOOTBALL.
Game date: November 5, 2011

Santa Ana running back Terrance Holzendorf’s 203 yards on 25 carries pushed the visiting Dons past Southwestern College Saturday, 35-17.

“Terrance is playing at an all conference level,” Head Coach Geoff Jones said. “He uses all of his size (5’6”, 145 pounds) to cause misses by the defense.”

Heavy rain the night before made Devore Stadium more suitable for a rugby match instead of a football game. The field conditions played to Santa Ana College advantage, with 72 percent of the team’s 475 total yards coming from the run.

“The field was a sloppy mess. Every guy on the team was muddy by halftime,” Jones said.

The Dons’ defense held the Jaguars to 324 yards of total offense. The scoreboard showed a closer game than what took place on the field. Brett Nelson’s seven-yard pass to Jordan Jacobs, giving the Jaguars 17 points, came with under three minutes left in the fourth quarter.

“The defense never let up,” Jones said. “The guys are bonding more and more. On their back plates, a lot of guys have a saying ‘One Heart Beat.’ One little change makes a huge difference.”

The next game is Nov. 12, versus Orange Coast College at Eddie West Field.
