College campuses have historically been the epicenter of the American social conscience. Protesters commonly flirt with unacceptable behavior, but authorities rarely pursue disciplinary action. Regardless of whether you agree with their approach, the Irvine 11 were simply expressing their views much like anyone who has ever protested against a war criminal.
Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren was in the U.S. in February of last year attempting to persuade college students that Israel is a democracy. These students have been there and know better. They also knew that any media attention would not bring justice to the displaced, the refugees or dead Palestinians who are not able to speak for themselves.
At most, the students are guilty of displaying a lack of courtesy by interrupting Oren. If anyone should be on trial for the infringement of one’s rights, any Israeli official on American soil would fit the bill.
