AMC’s new series Preacher could be another comic book adaptation done right.

Preacher is an upcoming supernatural T.V. series developed by Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen and Sam Catlin, starring Dominic Cooper as the main character Jesse Custer.

The show is an adaptation of the comic book series of the same name created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, and published by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint. The series is scheduled to premiere May 22.

The story involves Custer, who is from a small town in Texas. After his father’s death, Custer becomes a preacher like him. One day, a mysterious entity inhabits him and gives him a strange new power. That power allows him to control anyone who can hear and understand his words. When he is possessed by the entity, Custer learns that God has left Heaven for an unknown reason. Along with his ex-girlfriend Tulip and an Irish vampire named Cassidy, Custer embarks on a journey to literally find God.

Even though the show has supernatural elements, there also some western themes along with a blend of action, comedy and drama. The idea of God leaving Heaven is similar to FOX’s show Lucifer, where the Devil leaves Hell.

If AMC can turn a comic book series like The Walking Dead into a successful show, then Preacher may have just as much success.
