The Ceramics Department hosted the annual Chili Bowl Sale Wednesday, displaying an array of ceramics on tables outside the arts building lobby.

Sale of the pieces raised money for the Soldiers to Scholars program, with some of the proceeds going back to the department.

The event showcased ceramic bowls and mugs created by the advanced ceramics class. Free chili made by faculty, and coffee donated by Starbucks, came with each purchase.

Pieces ranged from larger serving bowls to individual serving sizes, with glazed finishes in a range of hues and textures.

Two kinds of chili were available, one veggie and one recipe made with meat.

When chili ran out earlier than expected, customers purchasing a bowl were invited to pick out a free smaller bowl instead.

The program chosen to receive funds was different from years past.

“Because we already had an idea of a veterans organization outside campus, we thought ‘well lets just stay inside the campus and go with this program’,” ceramics professor Patrick Crabb said.

Advanced Ceramics student Elsa Leysack was initially surprised by how fast some of the items sold, including her own piece.

“I made one [ceramic bowl] and when it was one of the first ones to be sold I was very surprised,” Leysack said.
