Visiting Pirates Sail Past Dons

Visiting Orange Coast College sailed past the Dons, 8-1 Wednesday, after scoring four runs in the first three innings. Dons’ errors in the first and second helped plate the first two runs for the Pirates.
“We did three things right today. We played defense, we hit and we had great pitching and that’s a great combination for a win,” OCC Head Coach Jodie Legaspi said.
And hit the Pirates did. The team smacked 15 hits over seven innings off of Dons’ starter Desiree Hernandez, including a home run.
“I gave up a lot of hits,” Hernandez said.
But the Dons couldn’t muster any offense to support Hernandez. Pirates starter Montana Roelvink only allowed two hits over the first six innings, while recording four 1-2-3 innings.
“It doesn’t matter how many we give up, we need to score more than what we give up every inning,” Dons Head Coach Susie Parra said.
Pirates catcher Anna Marin added a two-run home run in the top of the seventh, increasing the lead to seven runs.
“All the pieces were together today,” Marin said.
The Dons scored its lone run in the seventh inning.
“We should have started from the beginning,” Hernandez said. “We started hitting at the end of the game. If we started in the beginning it would have been a different game.”
The Dons play Friday at Cypress, 2 p.m.
