About 1,200 runners of all ages attended the Plaza Wellness 5K Run Saturday in Downtown Santa Ana, nearly doubling attendance of last year’s event.

“When I talked to the staff, I said, ‘This year we should double. Let’s go to 1,500. In fact, let’s shoot for 2,000,” councilmember Roman Reyna, who participated in the run, said.

The Santa Ana City Council organized the free event to raise awareness of health and obesity issues.

“How cool is it that this event could bring the entire city to fight a cause?” Reyna said.

After runners finished and received their medal, Northgate Market’s stand offered them free bananas and refreshments.

Children, parents and grandparents joined in a free Zumba demonstration presented by Zumba Fitness after the race. Once the activity was over, runners stayed around to dance.

The event included a live DJ, a health fair that offered CPR certification and a VIP basketball game.

Organizers plan to increase participation to 5,000 runners next year.
