Getting To Know: Jason Kehler

Growing up in the San Gabriel Mountains with no neighbors leaves people with a lot of free time on their hands.

For Asisstant Director of Athletics Jason Kehler, it allowed him to develop his passion for sports.

“My dad was real big on football. We didn’t have cable, and the antenna wasn’t dependable,” Kehler said.

“But we did have satellite and we got all the Sunday football games.”

When he entered junior high, he pursued TV production. Once in high school though, they didn’t offer the same program so he chose journalism. He would go on to be sports editor and senior editor of the newspaper at Charter Oaks High School.

Kehler moved on to Cal State University, Fullerton and received a bachelor’s degree in communications with an emphasis in print journalism.

He then earned a master’s degree in sports administration from Concordia University.

Kehler spends his time away from his duties as assistant director of athletics exploring the world of craft beer. He stockpiles brews from all across the country, in his wife’s closet hoping to avoid a beer shortage in Orange County.

“It really is almost like wine tasting. You can pair the perfect beer with the perfect plate. Then it becomes a challenge,” Kehler said.

When he isn’t scouring the country for beer, he dedicates himself to his five-month-old daughter and wife Kelly.

“We didn’t know if she was going to make it, so when my baby girl was born and everything was OK, she was our saving Grace,” Kehler said.
